256 handmade and fired bricks

56 x 24 x 24 in

In 2018, I fired around 300 mud bricks that I had made for my installation Sanctuary. After holding onto them for over a year, I decided it was time to do something with them. After being inspired by Li Binyuan’s Breakthrough, 2019, I followed in his footsteps with this performance of the same year.

These bricks were made by my hand to build a sanctuary, a place of rest and safety. I then fired them as an attempt to make them more durable and permanent. These bricks serve as objects of my labor to defy Time and leave a lasting mark. Much of my toil serves as a trial against the passage of time and the eventual erasure of everything.

By constructing this form in a ravine, I’ve created an object that fills about as much space as my own body in a place where it’s destined to be swept away by a deluge of water. However, I subvert that outcome by taking the destruction of it into my own hands. I revolt against the inevitable demise of my work with the hastening of its destruction by my own hand.
